Water Vapor Barrier Property Test Method of Aluminum Coated BOPP Adhesive Tape

BOPP adhesive tape is BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) film coated with acrylic based adhesive in different coating thickness. Aluminum coated BOPP adhesive tape is BOPP adhesive tape coated with aluminum foil.

Aluminum coated BOPP adhesive tape is one new type of material that can be used in jobs requiring moisture and chemical resistance, thermal conductivity, flame resistance, heat and light reflectance, and weatherability. Sometimes it can be used to replace of aluminum tapes when applied on the insulating layers of pipes and the heating and cooling equipment, wall surfaces to prevent the structures from moisture and erosion.  If the water vapor barrier property of the aluminum coated BOPP adhesive tape is insufficient, the water vapor may permeate through the tape and get in direct contact with the internal part of the equipment or buildings, which is destructive to the equipment and buildings. Therefore, it is necessary to test the water vapor barrier property of the aluminum coated BOPP adhesive tape before use. The water vapor barrier property is represented by the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR).

This article provides a simplified test method of water vapor transmission rate of aluminum coated BOPP adhesive tape for your reference. The testing instrument is Labthink’s W3/062 Water Vapor Transmission Rate Test System.

Currently there are mainly two categories of test methods for water vapor transmission rate i.e. gravimetric method (also known as cup method and divided into dry cup method and wet cup method) and sensor method (including electrolytic sensor method, infrared sensor method and humidity sensor method). Labthink’s W3/062 Water Vapor Transmission Rate Test System uses gravimetric method.

Under a certain test temperature, a constant humidity difference is generated between two sides of the test specimen. The water vapor permeates through the specimen and into the dry side
